Ok, so as a makeup artist, many of you would think that of course I’m going to be saying that every bride must hire a makeup artist for her wedding day, right? Hmmm… not necessarily.
What I will say, is that it’s important to have a look at the bigger picture and decide what is important to you so that you’re the most happiest on your wedding day.
There is no doubt that weddings can be an expensive affair. According to the Herald Sun, the average cost of a wedding in Australia is $65k which is a lot of money. When it comes to makeup, I’ve heard many brides-to-be say “It’s so expensive.” Sure, there are bridal makeup artists at every price point to suit all budgets. Some charge ~$50 per bride and others charge ~$250+ and everything in between. Like anything in life, it’s important to understand what you’re paying for as often (as the saying goes) “you get what you pay for”.
One thing ALL brides want for their wedding day (regardless of background, ethnicity, income/social status, age etc) is to look and feel beautiful. They all want to look the best on their wedding day. When considering your wedding day look, ask yourself the following questions
- How important is that you look your absolute best on your special day?
- How important is it that your wedding makeup last the long day?
- Do you want your bridal party to look equally as beautiful and consistent with your wedding theme?
- Do you want to look back on your photos and say “Wow, how amazing do I look? I had no idea I could ever look that beautiful.”
- How much time do you have to run around?
- What price do you put on confidence and peace of mind?
I’m guessing that a lot of these statements resonate with you in one way or another and it’s important to be really clear on the answers to these questions before deciding what will best suit your needs.
In my experience, a well-educated professional makeup artist who values communication will consult with you to understand your needs, advise on skin care and help you discover the exact combination of colours and the right foundation formula that will make you look more beautiful than you could have ever imaged both on the day, hours later and in your photos. They will work with you to create the ideal wedding day look to make sure you look ‘the best version of yourself’ – minimising flaws, highlighting your best features without looking heavy using professional photo friendly products. The latter is really important because many couples spend thousands on their photographer so ensuring the makeup look photographs well in different lights is critical especially as some products can make your complexion appear white or shiny. No one wants to look ‘ghost like’ or sweaty.
Can your chosen makeup artist (whether that be you, a friend, a professional makeup artist etc) achieve your vision make you feel totally comfortable with your look? That will help you decide on who to hire (and at what price point), or not hire as the case may be. I’ve also seen examples where brides have done a great job applying their own makeup, for eg, Kate Middleton on her wedding. Having said that, those cases are fewer and far between and there are many brides who end up disappointed when they see their photos (which they’ve spent thousands on) or even on the day itself because things don’t go to plan.
